About Toto
The band Toto was formed in the year 1976 by guitarists Jeff Porcaro and David Paich (who were also highly acclaimed studio musicians who worked with Boz Scaggs at the time) as well as bassist/singer Bobby Kimball. Their name is derived from the Latin word meaning "all encompassing," the group was determined to explore every musical style.
Toto's third release, Turn Back, was an unfulfilling success in 1981. However, they bounced back with their fourth release, Isolation, which contained two hits with the title track and Roseanna. The album and tour made them a household name around the world.
After a short hiatus, Toto returns with the album Fahrenheit. It is a departure from the ballads of previous albums and features some heavy rock. This album was their first album to go platinum in North America.
In the course of recording the fifth album The group loses its manager and faces financial difficulties. They decide to change their name and create a new album with the new producer. Joseph Williams, the son of John Williams, the legendary film composer and actress Barbara Ruick from 1950s, takes over Fergie Frederiksen as the lead vocalist. Joseph Williams is a natural frontman, and gives the band a much-needed boost.
The band releases Mindfields in 1999 and embarks on a huge tour around the world. After a few months in Europe they come to Japan where the shows are sold out. After a brief hiatus, Toto resumes their recording and releases their first live album entitled Absolutely Live in 1993. The album features a cover of Weezer's hit song Hash Pipe as a response to the band's performance in Africa during their recent tour. Toto's touring band includes drummer Lenny Castro and bassist Shannon Forrest, as well as keyboardist Shem Von Schroeck.
